Anionic foaming surfactant esterified derivative of coconut oil fatty acids. It comes in the form of shavings.

INCI: Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate

SCI is an anionic surfactant derived from coconut oil used to make solid shampoos, soaps and shower bars that are well tolerated by the skin. It provides its foaming power to natural cosmetics, even with very hard water, and allows you to obtain solid cosmetics with a creamy foam, gentle on the skin and hair.

Use

- The SCI is included from 5 to 60% of the total weight of your preparation in your formulas.

- It is soluble in water but insoluble in oil.

To make your solid shampoo:

1/ To facilitate the melting of the SCI shavings and thus allow it to be mixed with the other ingredients, it is recommended to grind it using a pestle to obtain smaller pieces. Be sure to wear a mask and protective glasses because IBS is very volatile and can be irritating to the respiratory tract.

2/ In a stainless steel bowl, mix the SCI in the aqueous phase of your recipe (water or hydrosol) which should represent approximately 10% of the total weight of your preparation. Add any vegetable oils or butters from the recipe.

3/ Place your bowl in the bain-marie, holding it with tongs or a glove to avoid burning yourself. Stir your mixture constantly until the vegetable oils and butters melt.

4/ To make your dough more homogeneous, mix all your ingredients well using a pestle.

5/ Transfer your mixture into a mold and pack well. Then place your mold in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to help the mixture solidify.

Precautions for use

Be sure to always wear a mask and protective glasses when using IBS as it is very volatile and can be irritating to the respiratory tract.

Our opinion on the SCI

SCI is a controversial surfactant because it comes from a synthetic transformation process and is not completely biodegradable. It allows you to make solid shampoos and thus eliminate plastic from your bathroom. It is used by many vegan and organic brands for their solid cosmetics and has proven its effectiveness. However, its high dose toxicity for aquatic environments really raises questions for us and we are always looking for new 100% biodegradable natural surfactants, more in line with our values ​​and commitments. We hope to be able to offer them to you.
